School Attendance Policy
2009
Muire Na Mainistreach N.S.
Attendance in Muire Na Mainistreach N.S., has to date, not been a problem. The children and their parents are made aware of the need to attend regularly to ensure continuity in their education. The majority of our parents are very supportive and ensure that all absences are necessary and as brief as possible. Attendance details are forwarded to the N.E.W.B. as requested and as advised by the D.E.S.
- Parents are asked to provide a note of explanation, dated, regarding the absence of their child. The notes are kept in the ‘Attendance’ file in the office.
- The children are encouraged to inform their teacher in advance if they know that they are going to be absent.
- In the event of a child being absent due to illness over a lengthy period, the teacher will endeavour to assist in the ‘catching up’ process by collaborating with the Learning Support Teacher and parents.
- Parents call regularly to the school and inquiries can be made by the teacher if a reason for absence has not been given and a note may be requested.
- If a problem arises with regard to the attendance of a particular pupil, the school will follow the procedure as recommended by the D.E.S. and N.E.W.B. Parents of the child in question will have been given every opportunity to remedy the situation at an earlier date and will have been informed of the measures which will be taken if they are not prepared to do so.
- Parents are actively discouraged from taking their children on ‘holidays’ during the school year. The parents must assume all responsibility for any ‘catching up’ which needs to be done on the child’s return.
- The school actively promotes good school attendance through monthly class rewards and end of year student certificates.
